China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) provides a range of innovative and diversified communications services to empower smart city clusters across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). It is committed to accelerating 5G deployment across the region and to developing 5G-enabled technologies like artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and big data analytics.

A subsidiary of China Mobile Limited, the world’s largest mobile network operator in terms of subscriber numbers, CMHK has more than 5 million customers, including more than 2 million 5G subscribers. It operates THREE data centres in Hong Kong, with a new facility, in Fo Tan, expected to come into service in 2025 as a core data centre for the GBA.

Supporting Digital Transformation

Supporting Hong Kong’s digital transformation, 5G pioneer and leader CMHK is building a high-bandwidth, high-speed, low-latency communication network that will connect the GBA and reach the world. It invests heavily in 5G infrastructure in Hong Kong and vigorously promotes the development and deployment of 5G-driven industry applications in finance, education, logistics, real estate and other sectors.

“Hong Kong is being developed into an international information and technology centre of global influence in the GBA,” Johnson Zhang, Government & Enterprise Business Group Managing Director, China Mobile Hong Kong Limited, says. “As a key provider of digital intelligence in the city, we are integrating new technologies, like 5G, cloud and big data, that are the pillars of economic and social development in the digital age.”

CMHK provides 5G infrastructure services for many local landmarks, including the international airport, Science Park and Cyberport, as well as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Rail. It also led the establishment of the GBA 5G Industry Alliance, which now has more than 150 members, spanning operators, enterprises and researchers committed to promoting 5G-driven innovation.

Data Center Business Drives the Digital Economy

China Mobile currently has three data centers in Hong Kong, located in Kwai Chung and Tseung Kwan O. These data centers not only have advanced infrastructure, equipment, and technology but also have teams with rich operational experience and professional knowledge. Additionally, they are close to the submarine cable landing station, giving them a unique advantage in providing faster and more stable data transmission services to customers. China Mobile's data center business can meet the different needs of customers and provide comprehensive data center solutions, including rack hosting, cloud computing, network security, data backup, and other services across various industries.

China Mobile's data center business in Hong Kong is continuously developing and growing, with the newly constructed FoTan data center expected to commence operations in 2025. At that time, the FoTan data center will form a core data center system in the Greater Bay Area together with the other five core data centers that China Mobile has built and put into operation within the Greater Bay Area. The data center will also work in collaboration with five international submarine cables and five Guangdong-Hong Kong cross-border backbone land cable systems, further enhancing China Mobile's unique advantages of "self-owned data centers + cross-border international transmission resources + local 5G and fiber optic networks." In the future, we will continue to strengthen technology research and development and optimize our services to provide customers with higher quality, safer, and more stable data center and network services. As a global enterprise, China Mobile will continue to strengthen international cooperation, expand overseas market layouts, and provide customers with more comprehensive data center solutions. We believe that with the continued development of the data center business, China Mobile is becoming one of the leading enterprises in the data center market in China. CMHK is committed to becoming a leading service provider for Smart Hong Kong, serving the digital economy in Hong Kong, and supporting the construction of big data centers and technological innovation platforms in Hong Kong to promote high-quality development of the information and communication industry.

Nurturing Talent and the Ecosystem

“Next-generation talent is vital to the long-term development of Hong Kong as an innovation hub. To support this future, CMHK works closely with the education sector,” Johnson continues.

As a leading technology company, CMHK works on promoting the digital transformation of education in Hong Kong.  Launched a self-developed content distribution and e-learning platform, Edubile, provided on-demand and broadcast electronic teaching capabilities to the schools during the epidemic.  CMHK also actively promotes the popularization of STEM, collaborates with academic communities to create popular products, such as 5G Flag-Raising Live Broadcast Solution, 5G All-round Live Broadcast Lesson and 5G AIOT Butterfly Garden.

With the belief that digital life should be enriching for all, CMHK has also launched an innovative smart-life mobile application: MyLink. A one-stop service with more than 6 million users, it is an on-ramp to the digital economy and the metaverse.

“MyLink is nurturing a unique business ecology built on enterprise alliances. Together, we are linking the online and offline worlds, building a portal to new experiences and benefits, and helping Hong Kong people leverage technology to create a more dynamic and intelligent digital life,” Johnson  explains.
