AWS Hong Kong empowers enterprises with cloud computing
and trains the city’s future digital talents
“AWS is committed to nurturing future digital talents in Hong Kong and enhancing the competitiveness of the city.”
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted clouds, offering over 200 fully featured services from data centres across 33 geographic regions globally. It has supported the digital transformation of tens of thousands of companies in Hong Kong over the past decade, from big enterprises to start-ups, and public sector.
Underscoring its confidence in the city, AWS launched its Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Region in 2019. Since then, it has seen a growing wave of companies move their workloads to the cloud and leverage technologies like artificial intelligence and big data to foster innovation and build customer solutions. Over 1 000 start-ups and a number of the unicorns in Hong Kong are built on AWS. Furthermore, around 75% of the world’s top 100 banks operate in Hong Kong and many use AWS to support their operations and innovation needs.
Supporting business growth
Offering reliable and scalable cloud computing services and infrastructure in Hong Kong, AWS provides resources and tech support to help companies deploy effective go-to-market strategies. It also has a large AWS Partner community across the region, and gives customers the tools to help them meet their sustainability goals.
For example, customers can calculate the carbon emissions savings generated from AWS usage and incorporate these into their sustainability reporting. This is significant since moving to cloud can be up to 5 times more energy efficient than on-premises data centres in Asia Pacific according to the findings of the report The Carbon Reduction Opportunity of Moving to the Cloud for APAC by 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence.
“Organizations that embraced cloud services proved more responsive and resilient in navigating the challenges of the past few years,” Robert Wang, Managing Director, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Amazon Web Services, says. “Serving as a tech bridge, AWS helps companies transform and innovate, whether they are looking to expand their business in Hong Kong or via Hong Kong to the Mainland or the world.”
Nurturing digital talent
AWS understands that transforming a business through technology requires a new mindset and new skills.
“It takes a lot of effort and investment to train early stage technology talents or upskill internal employees,” Wang says. “But digital upskilling can enable cloud fluency across the entire organization, allowing it to take full advantage of the reliability, security, performance and cost benefits provided in the cloud.”
Since 2014, AWS has trained over 100 000 people in Hong Kong with cloud skills, providing training sessions in schools, universities, enterprises and the community to reach people from all walks of life. It also enhanced its strategic collaboration with HKSTP to establish Hong Kong's first AWS Joint Innovation Center in 2023.
“We are working with HKSTP to help IT companies, start-ups and researchers cultivate talents, spark innovation and commercialize their ideas through training, incubation programmes, data sharing, technology simulation and other practical support,” Wang explains.
“AWS is committed to nurturing future digital talents in Hong Kong and enhancing the competitiveness of the city,” he concludes.
